The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning by Max Charming Chapter 829

“For the past three months, Lana has thought of me as Andrew. But I’ve never felt the joy of truly having her,” confessed Kai.

It was rare for Kai to open his heart to anyone, even to Zach. Initially, Kai considered Zach a mere pawn against the wealthy Jardin family. Now that Hayson was gone, only Zach remained. However, Zach’s hatred for Hayson was not any less potent than Kai’s own. Since Zach had killed his own father, he could be ruthless to anyone. However, the one soft spot he had was for Madelyn.

“So what’s your plan?” Zach asked.

Kai sighed, “I’ll take it one step at a time. Better for her to live in the present than to wallow in memories that bring her pain.”

Kai remembered how Lana kneeled at the Stewart residence, hoping to catch a glimpse of Andrew. But he was long gone, and everyone knew it.

“Do you remember the wager we made four years ago?” Kai asked as he placed his hands in the pockets of his coat and looked toward Zach. His once carefree eyes had lost something irreplaceable.

Zach frowned, confirming that he had not forgotten. Kai continued, “We both lost that bet. You fell for Madelyn, and I’ve fallen for someone I shouldn’t have.”

Zach coldly retorted, “You’re the loser here. If it were up to me, their love story would never have started.”

After chatting for a while, Kai glanced at the window, its lights now on. He said, “I should go. It’s late. Get some rest.”

Zach’s eyes remained fixated on the still-dark window. The clouds dispersed to reveal a crescent moon, illuminating the snowy night.

Two weeks after Christmas, Zach became the top philanthropist in Venturia, and his influence skyrocketed globally. All the accolades meant nothing to him, though; they were merely his way of atoning, of doing something that might help awaken Madelyn.

For the first time in four years, Zach attended a formal dinner party-one he could not get out of. With a glass of wine in hand, he mingled with the crowd, keeping his consumption in check. As his eyes scanned the room, they landed on a familiar silhouette. A woman dressed in a striking red gown held the arm of a man beside her. Catching Zach’s gaze, she confidently raised her glass to him, taking a sip as if to toast him.

Zach remained unimpressed. When the crowd dispersed, he asked disinterestedly, “Who is she?”

Kevin replied, “That’s Serena, the daughter of the Secretary of Education. She was in the same class as Ms. Jent in high school. After graduating, she moved to Avalon. She’s recently returned to Venturia and even changed her name to Madelyn Smith.”

A sharp look crossed Zach’s face. He drained his wine glass and instructed, ” Bring her to the lounge to see me.”

“Yes, sir,” Kevin complied. Serena went to the restroom, clutching her chest. Her heart was still racing. She wondered if Zach had recognized her. She stared at her reflection, caressing her face as she comforted herself. “He shouldn’t have. It’s been so long; no one remembers how I used to be.”

The timid, shy Serena was a thing of the past. The woman in the mirror was who she was now. As she exited the restroom, ready to rejoin the party, her path was suddenly blocked, “M-Mr. Kevin?”

“Mr. Jardin would like to see you. Please, come with me,” said Kevin.

Madelyn Jent died on her wedding anniversary. She had been married to Zach Jardin for eight years, compromising for the better part of her life. However, she ended up being kicked out of the house. After the painful divorce, Madelyn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite her deteriorating health, she clung to life in the hospital, hoping that Zach would visit her one last time. As Valentine's Day arrived, heavy snow fell outside. Yet, Zach failed to make an appearance, leaving Madelyn with a deep sense of regret. "Zach Jardin... If I could start over, I would never fall in love with you again!"

Miraculously, Madelyn found herself reborn to the time when she was eighteen. Fueled by the desire to avoid repeating the same mistakes, she made a solemn vow to distance herself from everything related to Zach. But fate seemed determined to test her resolve. Just as she sought to escape the shadows of her past, the same man, Zach, emerged with an intimidating aura, gradually approaching her step by step. His voice, reminiscent of a devil's melody, echoed through the hallway as he declared, "Madelyn, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life..."

Chapter 1 On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Madelyn Jent, a 31-year-old woman, lost her battle to cancer. Inside a room in SereneCare Hospital in Ventropolis, the air was filled with a strong scent of disinfectant. [Zach, the doctor inserted a painful dialysis needle in me today.] [I'm on the verge of death. Could you spare a moment to visit me?] [Please, Zach...] Madelyn weakly turned her head and glanced at the text messages on her phone. Despite sending multiple messages, she had received no response from Zach. IV drips were connected to her veins. Her face was pale, her eyes sunken, and her body emaciated. Cancer had ravaged her limbs, causing them to deteriorate. She was completely immobile, unable to perform even the simplest tasks unaided. The nurse assigned to care for her hadn't shown up for almost two weeks, citing that further treatment was unnecessary. Madelyn was sensitive to the pain, but in the advanced stage of her cancer, she had to suffer with it every day. The only thing that kept her going was her love for Zach. But now, her once overwhelming love for him had faded. She was left with nothing but a frail and ailing body. Madelyn switched off her phone and silently awaited the embrace of death. The pain had nearly blurred her consciousness. She reminisced about the eight years she had devoted to being Zach's faithful wife. But what had she gained in the end? One by one, those around her had abandoned her, leaving her alone and destitute. Madelyn couldn't help but think that Zach would perhaps feel the greatest relief upon her demise. With her gone, he no longer subjected to the sight of her face. He could finally satisfy his longing to bring Cecilia Samford home as his wife. Eight months ago, on Zach's birthday, Madelyn sat on the couch, anxiously waiting for his return. It was well past two o'clock in the morning, and the carefully prepared meal on the table had grown cold. Instead of Zach, it was his assistant who arrived, bearing a divorce agreement. The assistant delivered the news hesitantly, saying, "Madam, Mr. Jardin had no choice. The Jardin Corporation is a vast enterprise that requires an heir." Madelyn forced a pale smile. A few years ago, she had been pregnant, but an accident had tragically led to a stillborn child. Since then, she hadn't been able to conceive.
