The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning by Max Charming Chapter 828

“Do you have to leave tonight?” Lana asked, absentmindedly staring into her bowl.

“In a couple of days,” Kai replied. “Can’t you stay? I don’t want you to go, Lana said, hoping to keep Kai by her side.

Kai remained silent for a moment. before finally speaking, “It’s different this time. The mission is critical, and they need me to complete it.”

“Alright, I support you. You’re the best. When you come up with a groundbreaking cancer treatment, both the baby and I will be so proud of you,” she said with a warm smile.

Kai grinned and caressed her hair gently. He said, “Then wait here for me, okay? I worry about you being alone at home. The hospital is close to the research institute, and I’ll visit whenever I can.”

“I understand. I’ll wait here for you,” Lana said.

After dinner, Kai washed the dishes before retreating to his room for a bath. When he was done, he left a single bedside lamp on. Just as sleep began to claim him, he heard the door creak open. Lana, clad in maternity pajamas and holding a pillow, stood beside the bed. She asked, “Can I sleep with you tonight?”

Before Kai could answer, Lana had already climbed into bed and snuggled against him. He wrapped his arms around her, her soft scent filling the air. By eleven that night, Lana had not changed her position. The room was so quiet one could hear Kai’s uneven breathing. Lana asked, “Are you asleep?

“No.”

“Is it because I’m here that you can’t sleep?”

“No, don’t overthink it. Just sleep,” Kai said, reaching over to switch off the bedside lamp and plunging the room into darkness.

‘Am I doing the right thing? And what about this child? Is this really what you want, Andrew?’ Kai’s mind was a storm of conflicting thoughts. After Kai felt Lana’s breathing even out in sleep, he carefully pulled his arm away and got out of bed, leaving the room.

On the fifteenth-floor terrace, there stood another man who also could not sleep. Kai approached and stood beside him, “If you keep standing here, you’ll turn into a statue.”

Zach responded, “When are you leaving?”

“After Christmas. Who knows when I’ll see her again,” Kai sighed. Snow had blanketed the city that day, turning everything white. Kai added, “1 It’s been a long time since it snowed this much here. If she never wakes up, are you going to wait forever?”

Zach remained silent. Even he did not know the answer to that question.

Kai chuckled, “Never mind. You’re a man of few words. I won’t get much out of you. Unlike you, I still have a chance at redemption. Once she wakes up, I don’t know what you’ll do.”

“Shut up if you have nothing good to say,” Zach snapped.

“You know, Zach, I’ve understood what it feels like to truly care for someone. I can’t bear to tell her that the man she loves is already gone. To save her from the pain, I hypnotized her into believing that I am him,” Kai confessed.

Madelyn Jent died on her wedding anniversary. She had been married to Zach Jardin for eight years, compromising for the better part of her life. However, she ended up being kicked out of the house. After the painful divorce, Madelyn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite her deteriorating health, she clung to life in the hospital, hoping that Zach would visit her one last time. As Valentine's Day arrived, heavy snow fell outside. Yet, Zach failed to make an appearance, leaving Madelyn with a deep sense of regret. "Zach Jardin... If I could start over, I would never fall in love with you again!"

Miraculously, Madelyn found herself reborn to the time when she was eighteen. Fueled by the desire to avoid repeating the same mistakes, she made a solemn vow to distance herself from everything related to Zach. But fate seemed determined to test her resolve. Just as she sought to escape the shadows of her past, the same man, Zach, emerged with an intimidating aura, gradually approaching her step by step. His voice, reminiscent of a devil's melody, echoed through the hallway as he declared, "Madelyn, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life..."

Chapter 1 On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Madelyn Jent, a 31-year-old woman, lost her battle to cancer. Inside a room in SereneCare Hospital in Ventropolis, the air was filled with a strong scent of disinfectant. [Zach, the doctor inserted a painful dialysis needle in me today.] [I'm on the verge of death. Could you spare a moment to visit me?] [Please, Zach...] Madelyn weakly turned her head and glanced at the text messages on her phone. Despite sending multiple messages, she had received no response from Zach. IV drips were connected to her veins. Her face was pale, her eyes sunken, and her body emaciated. Cancer had ravaged her limbs, causing them to deteriorate. She was completely immobile, unable to perform even the simplest tasks unaided. The nurse assigned to care for her hadn't shown up for almost two weeks, citing that further treatment was unnecessary. Madelyn was sensitive to the pain, but in the advanced stage of her cancer, she had to suffer with it every day. The only thing that kept her going was her love for Zach. But now, her once overwhelming love for him had faded. She was left with nothing but a frail and ailing body. Madelyn switched off her phone and silently awaited the embrace of death. The pain had nearly blurred her consciousness. She reminisced about the eight years she had devoted to being Zach's faithful wife. But what had she gained in the end? One by one, those around her had abandoned her, leaving her alone and destitute. Madelyn couldn't help but think that Zach would perhaps feel the greatest relief upon her demise. With her gone, he no longer subjected to the sight of her face. He could finally satisfy his longing to bring Cecilia Samford home as his wife. Eight months ago, on Zach's birthday, Madelyn sat on the couch, anxiously waiting for his return. It was well past two o'clock in the morning, and the carefully prepared meal on the table had grown cold. Instead of Zach, it was his assistant who arrived, bearing a divorce agreement. The assistant delivered the news hesitantly, saying, "Madam, Mr. Jardin had no choice. The Jardin Corporation is a vast enterprise that requires an heir." Madelyn forced a pale smile. A few years ago, she had been pregnant, but an accident had tragically led to a stillborn child. Since then, she hadn't been able to conceive.
