Blake thought, “They say to tell me fresh gossip? They had set me up. I wouldn’t have come if I knew they were taking advantage of me. Never have I ever let someone take advantage of me.’
Blake nudged the person beside her with her elbow, “Hey, isn’t my boss who approves my salary here? With him around, I don’t have to treat for this meal today.”
Christina Hartwell was the top performer in the Sales Department. She had a melodious voice with a sweet Taiwanese accent. Many people in the company were fascinated by her. With her beautifully manicured fingers under her chin, she blinked her big eyes at Kevin. The male colleagues around her were stunned by her state.
Christina said, “Blake, from what I’m hearing, it seems like there’s something between you and Mr. Harrison. Are you two in a relationship?
“No way! The company prohibits office romances. If they find out, the couple could get fired. However, I don’t think Mr. Harrison would be the one to lead in breaking company rules, right?”
Kevin drank his glass of water quietly without eating any grilled food on the table.
While Blake was earnestly having her meal, her phone suddenly vibrated. To her surprise, she received another transfer of five hundred dollars and a message from Christina, [Let’s switch seats.]
‘I’m going to be rich! A thousand dollars in hand!’ Blake thought. She quickly replied, [Sure, no problem.]
Blake pretended to have a stomachache and excused herself to the restroom, allowing Christina to sit beside Kevin. Blake saw Kevin and Christina were having a spirited chat as soon as she left.
‘I had never seen him talk so much even though we commuted together.’ Blake thought to herself.
Blake suddenly lost interest after seeing her colleagues had not finished eating. She found a less smoky spot to freshen up herself. Suddenly, someone walked over, sat beside her, and asked, “Had enough to eat?”
Blake looked up in surprise as Edison Langley handed her a can of beer. Without much thought, she took a sip, and her face contorted. “Urgh, it’s tastes awful.”
“Have you never drank alcohol before? “Edison asked.
Blake replied, “I’ve been too busy studying before. No time for drinking.”
“If you really can’t accept it, just stop,” said Edison.
Blake said, “It’s okay. I’ll just treat it like a beverage and drink it slowly.”
Edison noticed Blake seemed to have something on her mind, though she had not explicitly mentioned it. When he saw Blake drink most of it, he asked, “Blake, are you really with Mr. Harrison?”
Blake said jokingly, “I wish to! But would he be okay with it? How could he be interested in someone like me, a nobody, when he doesn’t even fancy the mayor’s daughter?”
“It’s good you’re not together,” Edison muttered.
Blake asked, “What did you say?”
“Oh, nothing! You are a good person. You don’t have to compare yourself with others. Maybe someone in the company has a crush on you,” said Edison.
Blake could hear something amusing from Edison’s words. She bent over and laughed, “Who likes me? Tell me! It might work out if the person is to my liking. Then, my mom won’t hassle me about blind dates every day. I’m just in my twenties, but it feels like she’s pushing me to get married as if my life depends on it.”
Edison said, “Actually, It was…”
After drinking one and a half cans, Blake immediately felt off. She said, ” Oh dear, I’m getting dizzy.”
Fifteen minutes after the alcohol hit, people at the stall heard a strange, howling song. The woman, clearly drunk and disoriented, stumbled around while the guy next to her tugged and pulled.
“When did Blake and Edison become so close? They’ve been gone for so long. They haven’t gone off to do something else, right?”
“During dinner just now, I noticed that Edison’s gaze toward Blake was off the entire time. The moment Blake left, Edison immediately followed suit.”
