Blake held on to those files and pictures. She could even see herself coming and going to work with Liam in the photos. She said guiltily, “Why did you arrange for someone to take these pictures? Are you scheming something, Kevin? Could you tell me what it is? I might be able to help.”

Kevin calmly glanced at the pictures. He replied weakly, “Not just you; every move Cecilia has made must be under my control. Knowing too much about this will not benefit you. I’m letting you know the goal behind these pictures in order for you to understand that you are already involved in this mess. It wouldn’t be so easy for you to leave now, even if you wanted to. Cecilia might make a move on you at any moment. You understand?”

Blake nodded her head solemnly, “I understand, but I’m not a coward.”

She sat beside him and pulled his hand under the blanket. Blake held onto his hand tightly and said, “If anything bad happens, I still want to endure it with you. If it has anything to do with you, I’ll never be scared. I also know that with you here, you’ll never let anything happen to me. Even if I were to be in danger, you would immediately come to my rescue.”

“You truly aren’t scared to die,” Kevin chuckled.

Blake heard him soften his tone and knew he had given in. She smiled and gave his lips a peck, “I learned it from you.”

Then, Kevin stared deeply at Blake as she smiled.

“Oh right, there’s also some files. You say they’re connected to them. Can I take a look?” Blake asked. Kevin hesitated before replying, “Next time. I have the wrong files here.”

Blake nodded and did not think much of it. She continued to ask, “Why were you so gravely wounded? Who was able to hurt you this way? Should we call the cops?”

‘Call the cops? How naive of her,’ Kevin thought.

However, he merely answered, “Cecilia is trying to look for something.”

“What is it?” Blake asked.

Kevin thought for a while and said, ” It’s the item Mr. Jardin left behind before the incident. No one’s seen it, knows what it is, nor knows who he gave it to. At first, I didn’t notice anything. But then I found out that Cecilia’s underlings had infiltrated the illegal organization that used to be owned by the Jent family. This means that the item was not as simple as it first seemed.”

Blake was curious, “Illegal organization? Jent family? I’ve heard of it before. Madelyn’s family used to be the tyrant of Ventropolis. The Jent family knew of numerous people’s secrets, but this confidential information was well-kept. Could Cecilia be looking for that to blackmail the elites of Ventropolis?”

Kevin suggested, “My guess is she’s going for his will.

“Zach must have had his will and testament drafted just in case something were to happen. However, even Zach never expected to survive this. Thankfully, there’s a silver lining; Cecilia will stop her rampage, but only if Zach returns. If Cecilia continues to run everything with an iron fist, the Jardin Corporation will be ruined very soon.”

Blake was so shocked she was speechless. Then she asked, “Will? How could it be? Mr. Jardin couldn’t have known that he would be in danger and left a will at the same time. Wait! Did Mr. Jardin know about everything that would happen after the wedding beforehand?”

A slight breeze blew in, but Blake felt a chill run down her spine and goosebumps all over her body.

‘My god, no wonder Mr. Jardin was able to become the CEO, Blake thought.

“Wait, then didn’t I just waste my time going to the police station? He even made me owe Liam a favor. If he hadn’t used his connections to rescue me out of the police station, I might’ve had a criminal record. Also, where were you when everything happened? You didn’t return any of my calls!” Blake shouted.

Madelyn Jent died on her wedding anniversary. She had been married to Zach Jardin for eight years, compromising for the better part of her life. However, she ended up being kicked out of the house. After the painful divorce, Madelyn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite her deteriorating health, she clung to life in the hospital, hoping that Zach would visit her one last time. As Valentine's Day arrived, heavy snow fell outside. Yet, Zach failed to make an appearance, leaving Madelyn with a deep sense of regret. "Zach Jardin... If I could start over, I would never fall in love with you again!"

Miraculously, Madelyn found herself reborn to the time when she was eighteen. Fueled by the desire to avoid repeating the same mistakes, she made a solemn vow to distance herself from everything related to Zach. But fate seemed determined to test her resolve. Just as she sought to escape the shadows of her past, the same man, Zach, emerged with an intimidating aura, gradually approaching her step by step. His voice, reminiscent of a devil's melody, echoed through the hallway as he declared, "Madelyn, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life..."

Chapter 1 On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Madelyn Jent, a 31-year-old woman, lost her battle to cancer. Inside a room in SereneCare Hospital in Ventropolis, the air was filled with a strong scent of disinfectant. [Zach, the doctor inserted a painful dialysis needle in me today.] [I'm on the verge of death. Could you spare a moment to visit me?] [Please, Zach...] Madelyn weakly turned her head and glanced at the text messages on her phone. Despite sending multiple messages, she had received no response from Zach. IV drips were connected to her veins. Her face was pale, her eyes sunken, and her body emaciated. Cancer had ravaged her limbs, causing them to deteriorate. She was completely immobile, unable to perform even the simplest tasks unaided. The nurse assigned to care for her hadn't shown up for almost two weeks, citing that further treatment was unnecessary. Madelyn was sensitive to the pain, but in the advanced stage of her cancer, she had to suffer with it every day. The only thing that kept her going was her love for Zach. But now, her once overwhelming love for him had faded. She was left with nothing but a frail and ailing body. Madelyn switched off her phone and silently awaited the embrace of death. The pain had nearly blurred her consciousness. She reminisced about the eight years she had devoted to being Zach's faithful wife. But what had she gained in the end? One by one, those around her had abandoned her, leaving her alone and destitute. Madelyn couldn't help but think that Zach would perhaps feel the greatest relief upon her demise. With her gone, he no longer subjected to the sight of her face. He could finally satisfy his longing to bring Cecilia Samford home as his wife. Eight months ago, on Zach's birthday, Madelyn sat on the couch, anxiously waiting for his return. It was well past two o'clock in the morning, and the carefully prepared meal on the table had grown cold. Instead of Zach, it was his assistant who arrived, bearing a divorce agreement. The assistant delivered the news hesitantly, saying, "Madam, Mr. Jardin had no choice. The Jardin Corporation is a vast enterprise that requires an heir." Madelyn forced a pale smile. A few years ago, she had been pregnant, but an accident had tragically led to a stillborn child. Since then, she hadn't been able to conceive.
