The Legacy of the Alpha King: Hiding his Secret Twins Chapter 96 by Ebony Woods

Evelyn POV

Breathe in, and breathe out. That’s what I kept repeating to myself in order to look calm, cool on the outside. But in truth, on the inside my heart was breaking.

My wolf, if she could, would be pulling my hair out. She’s been spending the past hour begging for us to return, for us to collect our mate and bring him with us.

Why didn’t I do that? If Odin can’t touch us on Silver Moon pack lands..why didn’t I suggest that? Reuben was in such a hurry to get us on the road that my mind couldn’t work quickly enough.

It was like going against gravity, yet I wasn’t flying, I was still falling…as if backwards. I couldn’t explain it. With each mile we distanced ourselves away from the Red Stone pack, my heart was pulling apart even more. I could feel it, feel my heart only still hanging on, held together only by a few strings. Those strings were keeping me going.

I couldn’t look to my side, to Noah. I was angry at him for siding with Reuben, for undermining my ability to go to war, to help Reuben fight. I was an Alpha too. I commanded men and women too.

I was in the front passenger seat, Noah driving, leading the return with a car full of warriors behind us. Rex and Elspeth naturally were in the back with Cassandra keeping them apart in the middle. They’ve been bickering since we left, about Harry of course. Rex kept reminding Elspeth that he was his friend and Elspeth kept reminding her brother that Harry belonged to her, like bunny..

It didn’t help that Rex was also angry at Noah for picking him up and forcefully removing him from Reuben’s home. The atmosphere in the car was heavy, Rex’s slight aura only added to my thunderous one, which Noah was doing a good job at trying to ignore.

Cassandra on the other hand was. struggling, I was her alpha now. She would struggle with my aura which was more powerful than Alpha Ivo’s at the Blue Moon pack.

I can feel Noah trying to push on my mind-link, but I keep refusing him access. Whatever he says, he’ll have to say it in the car, for all to hear.

“Your safety was his top priority Evelyn, yours and the kids…”

“I know that Noah, I just….I’m an alpha too, I could have helped him.” A disapproving growl rumbles from the back of my throat.

“He knows that, he’s not thinking that. Do you want to know what it’s like?” I finally look at him to see he is looking in the rear view mirror at Cassandra.

“What what is like?” I quietly ask, feeling intrusive in their special moment which is being ruined by my quarrelling children.

“To find your mate and not mark them? He’s showing a lot of restraint Evelyn, I’m quite impressed with him.” He chuckles slightly, amused.

“Don’t tell me now that your starting to like him?”

“Let’s just say you bring out the best in him…” He winks at me before returning his eyes back to the road. I smile at his comment. I don’t think that’s quite right, perhaps I just compliment his warmer side. As a pack leader, I wouldn’t want to go against Reuben, he was still a force to be reckoned with, something his father would find out soon enough.

“I just think, if we had stayed and figured it out together…”

“There’s two Reubens Evelyn. One when he thought you were gone, and the other when you had returned. He doesn’t want the first Reuben to experience that again…” Cassandra wades in from the back seat as does Rex.

“Mum, if Dad had a reason for us to go then you need to trust him.”

Since when did I get out-voted in this family?

“I need a wee…” Elspeth moans, completely changing the subject. “We can’t stop for a wee princess, you’ll have to hold it in.” Noah sighs, knowing his words won’t last.

“But I can’t Daddy, I really need to go …” She makes a noise that even questions my own bladder status.

“Noah, just pull off into the next road. There will be bushes or something, we will be quick.” Cassandra demands pointing at the next turning in the right.

“Please Daddy, it hurts.”

He takes the turning as instructed and pulls up on the side of the road by some bushes.

“Be quick!” He demands of Cassandra who takes Elspeth for me as I have entered a mind-link with the warriors behind.

“What’s happening Alpha?”

“Elspeth just needs a quick toilet stop.”

They were quick and a relieved looking Elspeth climbs back into the car and is strapped back in thanks to Cassandra. We start to get moving again trying to rejoin the main route when a warrior pushes on my mind-link from the car behind us.

“Alpha, we’ve picked up a tail.”

“What?” I respond opening up the mind -link to include Noah.

“You are sure?” I ask.

“Positive Alpha.”

“Let’s see if we can lose them.” Noah growls, taking another turning trying to rejoin the highway. I pull my phone out and try to use the satnav to find a quicker route back to the highway.

We’ve never turned off in this area before and are finding the roads endless diversions. “Now?” Noah asks through the mind- link including the warriors.

“Still there beta, you’ll have to put your foot down unless you want us to intercept?”

“No, the kids are in the car…” I roar back to them. I’m not the type of Alpha to leave them alone in a fight. Noah takes another turning and relief fills me as we start to see access to the highway at the end of the road. It’s a quiet road, very rural.

Suddenly, a man oddly walks out ahead of us, carrying a large object on his shoulder. He stands in the middle of our lane up head and at first I think he is confused, that he’ll jump out of the way but then I notice the large bazooka gun on his shoulder. I think I am delusional, asleep in the car but then he fires it, and I scream as the missile comes directly for us.

“Watch out!” I roar, petrified of the children being in the back of the car. Noah turns the steering wheel in time, the car skidding out of the way but at the cost of my men behind. I turn to see the warrior’s car hit and engulfed by a fireball. It happens to quickly for them to even scream.

“NO…” .” I roar as I feel their deaths through the pack link. Each link severed, my heart feeling the break as it always does.

I can’t breathe. their losses knocking the wind from out of my lungs. The pain resonates throughout my chest, a vibration so powerful due to their status, their training. The curse of being an alpha, always feeling the deaths.

“Evelyn?” Noah growls at me, as I slowly start to breathe my way out of my shocked state.

“They are all gone!” I murmur to Noah, who is driving the car frantically against his beta oath to bring the bodies home to their loved ones.

“Shit…. Hold on.” Noah puts his foot on the accelerator as a car hits us from behind, the same car that was following us.

I couldn’t see who it was, the windows were blacked out. He gains some distance between the our car and the one following us and I think we might just make it, then a car comes out of nowhere and hits my passenger side at full force. The same side as Elspeth.

The unexpected impact forces me to hit my head against the window, a loud crack is heard as my head bounces off the glass. The car starts to roll, flipping continuously as my heart breaks from hearing the children scream…my babies screaming for me and I can’t do anything. The force of the flipping car preventing me from being able to reach behind to comfort them.

“Mummy…” Is all I hear as my head hits something again and darkness takes me.

Needless to say, Mr. Anderson’s son had to be some big shot. “Nice to meet you, Jeff.” Dahlia smiled and greeted him warmly. “You must be Ms. Nicholson. It seems the rumors are true, you’re really stunning!” Although he had never met Dahlia, he had heard of her. She was one of the Four Beauties in Swinton and a rising star.
