Blake hesitated, then added, “I’m sorry! I completely forgot about our pretend relationship.”

Liam abruptly stood and approached her desk, “Blake, Cecilia shared some things at the hospital; I may need to return to my family soon. Regarding our arrangement, I might still need your assistance. If it’s too much, we can stop.”

Blake tensed, pondering. After a brief pause, she inquired, “How much longer do you need me?”

Liam’s silence lingered.

Blake continued, “Liam, remember. I have Kevin. I don’t want any misunderstandings when he’s back. But I’ll help if you need me. You’ve been there for me before.”

Liam nodded and smiled gently,” Alright. Since we’re friends, what did Cecilia tell you? You’ve been unusually quiet. If something’s troubling you, I’m here.”

Blake hesitated, her thoughts drifting to the video Cecilia showed her, depicting Kevin with a chilling, ruthless expression. His command had triggered a brutal action, reflecting a disturbing lack of concern for human life.

“I’m okay,” she reassured, though her voice lacked conviction.

Their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door. Susan entered, face taut with displeasure while holding a beautifully wrapped gift box, “Ms. Samford sent this dessert from The Deli. She thought you might not have eaten enough at lunch.” Having delivered the message, Susan promptly left.

Liam commented, “Cecilia seems to be reaching out to you. What’s your take on her?”

Disinterested in the box, Blake replied flatly, “I have nothing to do with her. Mya is the only sister I acknowledge.”

She then opened the package to find a variety of exquisite pastries. She did not eat any; instead, she rewrapped them and took them out to share with her colleagues. Blake announced, ” These pastries are from The Deli. Enjoy.

“Thank you! You’re so kind. It’s not easy to get takeouts from The Deli. They’re always in high demand.”

“Exactly! Last time I tried to order, they were all sold out.”

Blake added, “I wasn’t around much recently, and you all have been working hard. I appreciate all your help. Thank Ms. Samford for them; she’s the one who sent these.”

Upon returning, Blake noticed Liam’s observant gaze. “Why look at me like that? Is there something on my face?” she inquired, touching her cheek.

Liam observed thoughtfully, “Blake, you seem different from before.”

Puzzled, she asked, “Different how? I’m still the same Blake.”

Liam noted, “You don’t smile as much, and you’re intensely focused on your work.”

Blake offered a small smile, “Mr. Xander, people evolve. I’m more driven now.”

Liam’s smirk was tinged with approval, “Good. Whatever your goals are, you have my support.”

Blake nodded. With a newfound determination, she said, “Alright, Mr. Xander. The day’s not over yet. Shall we continue to work diligently?”

“Absolutely,” Liam agreed.

Madelyn Jent died on her wedding anniversary. She had been married to Zach Jardin for eight years, compromising for the better part of her life. However, she ended up being kicked out of the house. After the painful divorce, Madelyn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite her deteriorating health, she clung to life in the hospital, hoping that Zach would visit her one last time. As Valentine's Day arrived, heavy snow fell outside. Yet, Zach failed to make an appearance, leaving Madelyn with a deep sense of regret. "Zach Jardin... If I could start over, I would never fall in love with you again!"

Miraculously, Madelyn found herself reborn to the time when she was eighteen. Fueled by the desire to avoid repeating the same mistakes, she made a solemn vow to distance herself from everything related to Zach. But fate seemed determined to test her resolve. Just as she sought to escape the shadows of her past, the same man, Zach, emerged with an intimidating aura, gradually approaching her step by step. His voice, reminiscent of a devil's melody, echoed through the hallway as he declared, "Madelyn, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life..."

Chapter 1 On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Madelyn Jent, a 31-year-old woman, lost her battle to cancer. Inside a room in SereneCare Hospital in Ventropolis, the air was filled with a strong scent of disinfectant. [Zach, the doctor inserted a painful dialysis needle in me today.] [I'm on the verge of death. Could you spare a moment to visit me?] [Please, Zach...] Madelyn weakly turned her head and glanced at the text messages on her phone. Despite sending multiple messages, she had received no response from Zach. IV drips were connected to her veins. Her face was pale, her eyes sunken, and her body emaciated. Cancer had ravaged her limbs, causing them to deteriorate. She was completely immobile, unable to perform even the simplest tasks unaided. The nurse assigned to care for her hadn't shown up for almost two weeks, citing that further treatment was unnecessary. Madelyn was sensitive to the pain, but in the advanced stage of her cancer, she had to suffer with it every day. The only thing that kept her going was her love for Zach. But now, her once overwhelming love for him had faded. She was left with nothing but a frail and ailing body. Madelyn switched off her phone and silently awaited the embrace of death. The pain had nearly blurred her consciousness. She reminisced about the eight years she had devoted to being Zach's faithful wife. But what had she gained in the end? One by one, those around her had abandoned her, leaving her alone and destitute. Madelyn couldn't help but think that Zach would perhaps feel the greatest relief upon her demise. With her gone, he no longer subjected to the sight of her face. He could finally satisfy his longing to bring Cecilia Samford home as his wife. Eight months ago, on Zach's birthday, Madelyn sat on the couch, anxiously waiting for his return. It was well past two o'clock in the morning, and the carefully prepared meal on the table had grown cold. Instead of Zach, it was his assistant who arrived, bearing a divorce agreement. The assistant delivered the news hesitantly, saying, "Madam, Mr. Jardin had no choice. The Jardin Corporation is a vast enterprise that requires an heir." Madelyn forced a pale smile. A few years ago, she had been pregnant, but an accident had tragically led to a stillborn child. Since then, she hadn't been able to conceive.
