Moses ceased his beating and jogged over. He glanced at Josie leaning against the car. “That guy has learned his lesson. He won’t dare to cause trouble for at least six months.”
Dexter stood in the night, extending his hand. “Car keys.”
With a sigh, Moses belatedly found and handed over the car keys. Dexter turned and got into the car.
Josie headed towards the passenger seat, but before she left, she whistled at Moses. “You should have that eye checked out by a doctor.”
Previously, she had splashed spicy water on him, and it was still red now.
It had been a long time since Josie had really taken a good look at this city.
Dexter always drove at high speeds. In his youth, he was fond of thrilling activities such as racing, mountain climbing, and gambling. He indulged in all of these without exception. However, after taking over Russell Group, he had no choice but to become more composed, and many of his hobbies were left untouched.
Josie propped up her face, gazing intently at the profile of the man in the driver’s seat.
“I grew up in Wavery when I was just a teenager. I completed my middle school, high school, and university here and then immediately started working. And then, I met you. This city has witnessed everything about me,” she narrated slowly.
“A mere decade or so is not enough to encapsulate a lifetime.”
After hearing that, Josie nodded. “But I won’t have another decade like this.”
The vehicle passed by the best junior and senior high school in Wavery. Dexter had once studied and graduated from there. The current decor was completely different from before. Josie looked out the window. “I completed my high school here. Back then, the school was divided into two groups. One was the aristocrats and the wealthy, and the other was poor students like us who were desperately studying.”
She calculated the time. When she had just started school, Dexter had already skipped grades and left the school. It was fate’s design that their paths never crossed again.
Dexter’s slender hands were clasped on the steering wheel, occasionally glancing over, his expression somber.
“Back then, we were poor at home, and my stepmother despised me, thinking I was a burden to their family. Only Paul was kind to me. He would attend parent-teacher meetings for me, always exceptionally proud,” Josie said with a smile. “During those impoverished days, I often wondered, if my biological parents knew about my situation, would they feel heartbroken for me? After the university entrance exams, I took a part-time job at a supermarket to earn some money. I was worried about both passing and failing the exams, as my family couldn’t afford either outcome. Looking back, it was indeed a very long summer vacation.”
The Maybach sped along the open road, with Dexter unconsciously pressing harder on the accelerator.
He remembered the year of the university entrance exam. That was because of Summer’s relentless pursuit, and he had returned from abroad once to pick her up after school. As the students in their uniforms came rushing toward him, he wondered what he was thinking at that time.
He wondered if Leanne was among these people. How was she doing? Was she struggling a lot?
The vehicle passed by Wavery University, the only university in the country built by the sea.
“Fortunately, I was admitted with a full scholarship. I just had to earn my own living expenses,” Josie said, still feeling a sense of pride. “However, fate has played its fair share of jokes on me. My first love left me, and Paul had a car accident. Since then, I’ve had no life, only survival.”
In the end, she wore a bitter smile, looking at Dexter. What a handsome man he was, a man who grew up in luxury, forever strong and confident.
Even more astonishing was that he was the bright young man who once grew up with her.
“Back then, I desperately wished for someone like you to come and rescue me.”
Dexter’s eyes flickered as he subtly shifted his gaze. After a moment, he said, “The journey was complicated, but I made it here, didn’t I?”
