She remembered raising this dog as a child, and although Dexter knew about it, he had never seen it. Now, after so many years, he had probably forgotten. Moreover, Heather was afraid of revealing the truth, so it was unlikely for him to see it.
That was why she responded with confidence.
“Do you want to keep it?” Dexter rested his hand on the car window.
“Can’t I keep it? Mason Garden is mine now. You said so yourself.”
“What’s the point in keeping it?”
“Self-defense.”
He didn’t voice his opinion but glanced deeply at the worn-out appearance of Pepper and instructed Moses to drive on.
The car sped off, leaving a trail of dust. Josie, leading Pepper, was fuming with anger. “Pepper,” she said, “this man is our enemy. If you ever see him again, bite him as hard as you can.”
Pepper stuck out its tongue, unsure of how much it understood.
The Maybach pulled up in Mason Garden. Before Dexter got out of the car, he received a response from the other end: Mr. Russell, this dog is indeed the one from Olsen Residence. How did it end up with Ms. Warren?
Dexter narrowed his eyes, his expression somber.
Josie was short of staff at Wavery these days, so she could only leave Pepper at Mason Garden. After instructing Julie to take care of it, she then asked, “Where is Mr. Russell?”
Upon hearing these words, Julie’s tone softened, as if there was a glimmer of hope. She quickly said, “Mr. Russell went straight to the study as soon as he came back and hasn’t come out yet. He must be very tired.”
Josie let it be.
In a moment, Julie came out holding a bowl of soup, signaling her to go.
Josie furrowed her brows. “I’m not going.”
Julie clicked her tongue. “Mrs. Russell, don’t be so rigid. Perhaps, he might come back if you soften a bit.”
Josie wanted to laugh. “Mrs. Carroll, you should know that he’s going to have another wife in a few days.”
Julie was taken aback, then she sighed. “In my heart, you are the only Mrs. Russell.”
A pang of sorrow hit Josie, and she took the soup without revealing what was on her mind, simply saying, “Forget it.”
Larry was in the study discussing something with Dexter. There was no one standing guard outside. Josie approached the study and was about to knock when she suddenly realized the door was not locked, and the voices from inside flowed out.
“Everything is progressing steadily. The support we’re receiving from Mr. Barrett and Mr. Shaw is unprecedented. In fact, you don’t really need to prepare for the worst.”
The man’s voice was deep and resonant. “The waters of Wavery have been muddied. She must not be drawn into this.”
Larry quickly replied, “I’ve already notified the airport staff, so there won’t be any hindrances. As for the location, you can choose one.”
After a moment of silence, Dexter spoke, as if making a final decision, “Let’s choose Nalanica. The scenery there is beautiful, and it’s a good place to live. With what she has, plus what Grandpa and I gave her, she can live a worry-free life. Perhaps, she might settle down there after some time.”
As he spoke, his tone softened. “She is capable and resilient enough to thrive anywhere.”
“You really take care of her interests.”
“It’s a pity some people don’t appreciate it.” Dexter said with a light laugh. “Once I leave, she’ll probably hate me to death.”
Josie had been holding the soup for a while, so the tips of her fingers were burning hot.
“Perhaps Ms. Warren wouldn’t react this way if she knew of your good intentions.”
“You don’t understand her,” the man’s voice was tender, his tone seemingly sighing.
After a while, Larry hesitated and said, “But, don’t you suspect…”
The voice at the end of the conversation was deliberately lowered. Josie’s phone in her pocket vibrated, so she didn’t hear clearly. She took out her phone and indifferently saw the message. It was today’s hot topic—
Liana picked up Dexter from work, and the newlywed couple displayed an intimate demeanor.
