Josie remained silent. “Come in if you’re so capable.”
The hospital restroom was always bustling with people. At that moment, women of all ages were coming and going. Moses swallowed nervously, but upon remembering Dexter’s instructions, he bravely followed them in.
“Good heavens! This is the ladies’ restroom! What on earth are you, a grown man, doing in here!”
“You’re being a rogue!”
“Why are you still entering? If you step any further, I’ll call the police!”
Moses raised his hand. “I’m just here to find someone. I’ll leave immediately! I promise I won’t look around!”
However, no matter how he tried to explain, no one believed him. Someone even raised a broom to chase him away, while others went to fetch the security guard.
In the partition, Josie listened to the commotion outside, took out her phone, and sent a message. She waited a while before receiving a reply. She didn’t rush to go out. Only when Moses’ face turned red, and the security guard was about to take him away did she slowly walk out.
Seeing her come out, Moses felt as if he had received a royal pardon. “Josie, you scared me to death!”
Josie laughed. “Who asked you to come in? I ?1 don’t have wings. Do you think I can fly out?”
Moses’ blush had not yet faded, his face showing a look of helplessness.
Josie stepped into the elevator, which was crowded with people. She bumped into a man wearing a duckbill cap. He immediately helped her up, saying, “I’m sorry. I’m in a rush.”
After saying that, he left.
Moses didn’t even get a clear look at what he looked like.
“Josie, are you okay?”
Josie shook her head, watching the man’s retreating figure in the distance. Upon returning to the ward, Josie saw a woman seated in a wheelchair emerging from within. She was there to visit Mallory.
A jolt of alarm shot through Josie’s heart. She quickly entered, only to find Mallory’s complexion even worse than before and tears streaming uncontrollably down her face. “Who is that?”
Mallory took a deep breath. “Calvin’s ex-wife.”
Josie froze, letting out a gasp. Even though Calvin keeps a low profile, how could I have been unaware that he had a divorce?
“He… how did he…”
“She’s also my sister.” Mallory managed a smile, her expression strained. “Would you like to hear about it?”
Mallory remembered in May when she was nineteen, the weather was gradually approaching sweltering heat. The roadside trees seemed too languid even to muster up any energy.
It was just an ordinary day. She stepped out of the laboratory, changed her clothes, and opened her phone to see a WhatsApp message from her mother.
The gist of the message was that her room had a nice view, and her sister wanted to move in, especially since she wasn’t usually home.
Mallory’s father passed away early, and two years later, her mother remarried. Her stepfather, surnamed Sadler, came from a high- ranking family. His words carried weight in Wavery. Thus, Mallory started living under someone else’s roof with her mother.
That way of life didn’t last long. Mallory pulled herself together and was admitted to the best university in Wavery. She usually lived in the university dormitory and only returned to the Sadler family home when necessary.
The Sadler family had a daughter named Zendaya Sadler, who was two years older than Mallory. A car accident crushed her dreams when she was just eighteen. The Sadler family cherished her deeply, always fearing another mishap. To curry favor with the Sadler family, Mallory’s mother naturally catered to Zendaya’s every whim.
Zendaya had no real reason for wanting Mallory’s room. She just enjoyed possessing Mallory’s things as a way to assert her position in the Sadler family. It had always been that way. Everyone knew it, and they indulged her.
Mallory replied with a short text: I disagree.
“Anyway, you hardly ever go back to the Sadler family house, so it doesn’t really matter if she stays there.” In the dormitory, her roommate casually remarked after listening to the story.
“What she wants is not just my room.” Mallory sat down, took out her laptop from her bag, and began to work on the project she hadn’t finished in the morning.
She couldn’t figure it out in the morning, and she still couldn’t figure it out now.
