“Don’t bother even if the king of the world arrives.” Dr. Larson’s expression was grave. “There are so many things in the world, can you really deal with them all? I told you two years ago that your body needs rest. You need to rest and stop overthinking. Only then can your health improve.”
Dexter felt somewhat helpless. “Won’t I be reduced to a useless person?”
“Ah, yes, just be a useless person. Listen to me. Focus on recuperating for two years. After that, whatever you choose to do, I won’t interfere.”
Subconsciously, Josie shifted her steps. She knew Dexter’s health wasn’t the best, but she didn’t know it had worsened to that state. How could this have happened?
It seemed as if Dexter hadn’t heard. He said to the staff, “It’s fine. Go on.”
“Charles was investigated. You should already be aware of this, Mr. Russell. It implicated many people, including Preston Kaufman, who was the general manager at Russell Group. Do you remember? He was Charles’ trusted aide and was also affected. Consequently, many projects came to a halt.”
When Dexter was deep in thought, he had a habit of rubbing his fingertips. He nodded. “This man can withstand scrutiny.”
“Enduring is one thing, but if someone with ill intentions deliberately stirs up trouble, it’s a different story.”
“We came to Rivodia primarily to implore you to take action. It is crucial that we protect Preston. You personally promoted him within Russell Group. Over the past couple of years, he has handled numerous critical affairs. We simply cannot afford any mishaps.”
A slight change would affect everything else, even implicating Russell Group’s fundamentals.
Dexter lightly tapped his fingertips. “I’ll handle it.”
“Also…” The staff hesitated, glancing sideways to indicate. “If someone with ulterior motives knew Ms. Warren was with you, I’m afraid they might make a big fuss about it.”
As those words were spoken, Dexter looked up. “Josie-”
Josie’s heart fluttered, thinking he was calling her over. Just as she was about to step forward, she heard him say. “She must stay with me.”
From a distance, he gazed at her with an intense look in his eyes.
Josie was somewhat stunned, standing still in her spot.
Dexter leaned forward slightly. “What’s the matter? Are you going to meddle in my personal affairs too?”
“No…”
“Daddy!” A voice suddenly rang out. The newcomer was Grape. While everyone was distracted, she seized the opportunity and ran out from the children’s room, a freshly drawn picture in her hand. “Daddy, I’ve finished my drawing!”
“Hey!” Josie couldn’t stop Grape in time, and the latter had already quickly thrown herself into Dexter’s arms.
The icy expression on Dexter’s face instantly melted away. He caught Grape with a smile. “You drew so well.”
Grape obediently pointed out. “This is Daddy, this is Mommy, and this is me! There’s also Grandpa, Uncle Justin, and so many more people.”
That highly abstract painting left everyone present dumbfounded. None of them had ever expected Dexter to have a child out of the blue.
Dexter was very patient. He unfolded the painting and asked everyone, “Do you think my daughter’s painting is good?”
Josie furrowed her brows.
Of course, the senior executives nodded in agreement. “I-It’s nice…”
In reality, they exchange glances. This couple is truly inseparable now that they have a child together.
Dexter spoke meaningfully. “Since you think it’s nice, each of you should print a copy and take it with you.”
The others were taken aback.
He’s lost his mind. Josie thought as she stepped forward in her high heels. Then, she heard the senior executives respond. “We’re on it.”
Josie was rendered speechless.
Dexter even went as far as educating Grape. “Say thank you to these misters and ma’ams.”
“Thank you, misters and ma’ams! You all have great taste!”
The corner of Josie’s mouth twitched. A self- admiring father paired with a self-admiring daughter. They are indeed a perfect duo.
