Grape awoke in the early morning, her eyes scanning her surroundings. Upon seeing Dexter, she broke into a shy smile. He hadn’t slept a wink, but upon seeing her awake, he too, revealed a smile.
Grape immediately got up, silently walked over to Dexter, and lay in his arms, softly calling out, “Daddy.”
Dexter gently caressed her hair. “Hmm? Still sleepy?”
Grape nodded in agreement.
“I’ll stay with you a little longer while you sleep.”
She nodded again.
Dexter was cradling her in his arms, initially intending to lull her to sleep. Unexpectedly, he too fell asleep without realizing it.
When Josie awoke, she reached out and found no one beside her, startling her. As she sat up, she was greeted by the following scene-the towering Dexter curled up on the couch, cradling Grape in his arms. She was somewhat taken aback, momentarily at a loss for words to describe the scene before her.
I must be out of my mind to actually be warmed by the sight.
Dexter’s cell phone on the table suddenly rang. He immediately opened his eyes, exchanged a glance with Josie, gently placed Grape down, and then answered the call. His voice was somewhat hoarse. “What is it?”
The weather was bad that day with stormy conditions outside. From his angle, he could see the wilted roses in Morgan’s yard.
Scott’s voice echoed from the other end of the line. “I just received news that a person drowned in Southern Wavery. The victim was one of Robyn, no, Arnold’s men. He worked for Arnold for many years and was pretty skilled. He was certainly no low-level henchman.”
Yet, he died just like that.
Dexter’s face was calm. He unconsciously raised his hand and tapped his finger on the windowsill. “Is there a river near the prison in Southern Wavery?”
“Yes, they were probably attempting a prison break.”
Arnold had never truly valued human life.
“What a grand plan.”
“What should be done with this man now?”
Josie had already risen and finished freshening up when she overheard Dexter’s response. “Clean him up and send him directly to the place where Arnold works.”
Scott was taken aback. “That’s not a good idea. It could have a negative impact on society, and the higher-ups would probably blame us.”
Dexter said lightly, “Didn’t Mr. Ziegler tell you to obey me?”
At this point, Scott had no choice but to agree.
The call ended, and Josie walked up behind him before sitting next to Grape. She brushed away the strands of hair sticking to the corner of Grape’s mouth. “Is Arnold aware that the person is dead?”
“Before he made this decision, he knew what the outcome would be. I merely allowed him to witness it with his own eyes.”
Dexter said, “Do you really think he intended to break into the prison?”
“You’re warning him by making an example out of that man.”
Under the premise of the collaboration between the two families, Josie needed to work at Keller Group, while Alice and the others would also go there.
