With something to bite, Paul lost all reason and fiercely bit into Dexter’s palm.
“Mr. Russell!” the housekeeper exclaimed in surprise.
Blood started to flow from Dexter’s hand.
Dexter didn’t even flinch as he quickly ordered, “Call Moses in! Take Grape away, don’t let her come over!”
The housekeeper hurried off to get it done.
Josie’s lips trembled incessantly. Upon witnessing the scene involving Paul, she truly wished she could kill Arnold.
“Jo!” He called her back to reality, “Go pour a glass of water.”
She closed her eyes briefly, then quickly stepped forward. Despite her trembling hands, she managed to pour a full cup of water. She then crouched down and slowly fed the water to Paul.
Josie spoke rapidly. “It’s Arnold’s doing. There’s no way he would let me rescue Paul so easily. He threatened me, saying that if I wanted to get the antidote, I must obey him! As I said, Arnold cannot die. Although Paul has escaped, his life is still in Arnold’s hands.”
She looked at Dexter with a burning gaze. “Let Edward go, I need to save Paul. Whatever you want, I’ll do it for you, okay, Dexter?”
Paul’s condition simply couldn’t withstand any more turmoil. Josie was terrified that if he had another episode, it might cost him his life directly.
Dexter’s pupils constricted, his voice deep as he said, “Calm down first. It’s not as simple as just releasing Edward right now. Even if you manage to do that, Arnold won’t give you the medicine!”
Josie continued to tremble.
Moses had already entered, and upon seeing the mess before him, he was stunned in place. “What on earth happened here?”
Dexter quickly said, “Go after Mr. Hackett, who just left, and tell him that I want to borrow someone from him, the deputy director of the drug rehabilitation center.”
Before Moses could even ask why, he said, “AII right, they haven’t been gone long. I should be able to catch up if I leave now.”
Dexter glanced at Josie. “Be quick, and also, don’t tell him why.”
Moses quickly walked away.
Paul had stopped convulsing, but he had lost all his vitality, his gaze unfocused and scattered. Dexter slowly withdrew his hand, which was already drenched in fresh blood. Paul had bitten Dexter deeply, creating a terrifying sight.
He didn’t even blink.
Josie crouched down, clutching a piece of paper, gently wiping away the blood and froth from the corners of Paul’s mouth.
Dexter sat paralyzed on the ground, propping himself up with one hand on his knee. “Given your father’s situation, it would be best to send him to a rehabilitation center for treatment. If you’re worried about leaving him alone, I can arrange for someone to come to your home and provide support.”
With mechanical movements, Josie quickly voiced her disagreement. “I don’t agree.”
“Why?”
“He can’t quit in his current condition. Look at him, he’s become nothing but skin and bones. His underlying illnesses couldn’t support him through withdrawal. It’s just medication, after all. If it allows him to live healthily, what’s wrong with taking it?”
Dexter furrowed his brows. “Do you even understand what you’re saying? That kind of drug has more harm than good. If he keeps taking it, it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong!”
“And you think forcibly stopping him from taking those drugs will save him?” Josie roared, her eyes red with anger. “Why on earth won’t you let Edward go? My father’s life is at stake too! Are you just going to stand by and watch him die?”
Dexter’s gaze gradually grew cold. “I am indifferent to life and death, Josie. How can you still be so naive? If I were to release Edward, do you truly believe that Arnold would provide you with the medicine? If he had an ounce of conscience, he would not have allowed Paul to become addicted in the first place!”
Josie continued to tremble. “I understand, I understand it all. However, as I mentioned earlier, I do not want Paul to suffer any longer.”
The two remained at a stalemate, with no one paying any attention. Meanwhile, Dexter’s hand, hanging by his side, continued to bleed profusely.
