The next day, Mallory and Lachlan met at the airport. Although he claimed to be the boss, Mallory was somewhat skeptical. She teasingly said, “No wonder Dexter is so eager to bring you back to the country.”
Josie’s expression turned grim. “I’m not returning to the country for his sake.”
Mallory ordered two cups of coffee at Starbucks and also got a small cake for Grape. While they waited, she asked, “Do you know why I’ve been able to stay with Calvin for so long?”
Even after experiencing tremendous turmoil, they were still together.
“Why?” Lachlan inquired.
“I did it by turning a blind eye. I could tolerate his somewhat questionable relationships with other women, and he could accept my flirtations with other men. But when it came down to the wire, when we had to make a choice, he and I would choose each other.” Mallory, with her cascading waves of hair, still radiated a dazzling beauty when she laughed.
Josie didn’t quite understand. “How can you be sure that you two are meant to be?”
“Perhaps because we’re soulmates.”
In Josie’s eyes, she had a different idea about soulmates.
The waiter brought over the coffee and cake. Josie scooped up a spoonful and fed it to Grape, watching as she ate with delight. Josie felt happy seeing how thrilled Grape was.
“The other half I yearn for must be unwaveringly loyal from the very beginning, without a shadow of a doubt,” Josie said.
Upon hearing this, Mallory looked outside. “Are you talking about Lachlan?”
Josie fell silent.
As it was almost time to board, Lachlan had just finished handling his business affairs. He closed his laptop and watched as Josie walked toward him, holding the child.
However, Josie’s gaze fell upon a figure not far away. It was a rainy day in Sumanthova. The glass windows were foggy, and the man’s silhouette appeared hazy through the mist.
Lachlan asked her what was wrong.
Josie shook her head and followed the crowd to board the plane.
Lachlan spoke from behind her, discussing the arrangements for their return to Rivodia. As a semi-host, he had planned the itinerary quite appropriately
After hearing that, Josie felt somewhat apologetic and said, “I’m afraid I might have to disappoint you. I’ve already made prior arrangements.”
Lachlan’s expression froze as he looked toward the private jet parked not too far away, unsure of who could be inside.
“Him?”
In fact, Larry had reached out to her the previous night, suggesting that they not take a regular flight back to Rivodia. Josie had declined. With the child still so young, she didn’t want her to feel superior to others.
“My primary purpose for returning to Rivodia is to find Paul. As for anything else, I haven’t given it any thought.”
Lachlan seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
Heading out with Grape was always effortless for her. She possessed the ability to fall asleep in a mere second.
The airplane had internet access, so Josie opened her laptop and plugged in her headphones. As soon as she launched the music app, she saw a string of garbled text requesting to listen to music together.
She refused it, but the other party requested again. This went on a couple more times.
Josie felt helpless, curious to see who was on the other end. She agreed to the request, and the melodious instrumental music flowed into both their ears.
Immediately after, she saw the other party typing on the public screen: What can be confirmed is that Paul is in good health, but he is under house arrest.
Josie furrowed her brows, nearly spilling her coffee. Dexter! How did he know my music account? Well, he managed to find the person I was looking for. What’s all this in comparison?
To gather additional information about Paul, Josie had no alternative but to be truthful. She typed: Paul had previously conducted an unsuccessful surgery on Mr. Dalton’s older sister, which might have led to their animosity. However, during their recent trip to Rivodia, they explicitly stated to me that Mr. Dalton did not authorize the abduction of Paul.
Upon receiving this vital information from her, Dexter on the opposite side commenced contemplating.
