After carrying the bag for a while, Josie’s wrist began to ache. She handed everything over to Moses. He immediately took it, looking at her tentatively, his gaze resembling that of a puppy.
Josie continued to walk ahead while Moses and the others followed closely behind, maintaining a brisk pace. She said, “Take me to meet Dexter.”
Russell Group was on high alert, with everyone in the building feeling threatened. When Josie set foot in the place once again, a sense of long-lost familiarity washed over her.
She had initially thought that she wouldn’t have the opportunity to come back.
The lights in the penthouse office were bright: The secretary led Josie inside. As she looked up, she saw a mountain of files piled up on the desk, and various documents and items scattered around the rest of the space.
No one had cleaned up the mess.
The office was completely empty, yet the secretary didn’t dare to proceed further. She cautiously said, “Mr. Russell should be in the lounge.”
Taking a deep breath, Josie decided to go in.
The atmosphere within the room was oppressive. The door to the lounge was half- closed, and inside, it was pitch black, devoid of any light.
Earlier, in the car, Moses had been like a child tattling to their parents, telling Josie many things about Dexter.
He talked about how Dexter negotiated with major shareholders, how he kept the project going under immense pressure, and how he stood firm against the media without giving an inch.
All of those required tremendous mental strength, yet Dexter single-handedly shouldered everything, not revealing a shred of it while she was recovering.
“Josie, to be honest, if nothing had gone wrong on the wedding day, Russell Group wouldn’t have ended up in this vulnerable position again. That day, Mr. Russell still insisted that we do everything in our power to bring Justin back. He’s been drinking quite a lot lately due to social obligations, which led to gastrointestinal bleeding. Josie…” said Moses.
Josie stood at the doorway, suddenly overwhelmed by a profound sense of helplessness.
The lounge was dimly lit, with only the light from outside filtering through the glass windows and falling in the corners. Dexter’s silhouette, rising and falling, seemed particularly lonely and desolate.
He seemed to be searching for something, his bangs fluttering on his forehead, his breath somewhat hurried. He was so engrossed that he didn’t even notice someone had arrived. He must not have found it. He tilted his head back slightly, letting out a sigh, seemingly out of options.
Josie took a step and startled him. Immediately, he raised his hand to switch on the light. “Who’s there?”
The sudden burst of light caused Josie to raise her hand instinctively to shield her eyes. When she moved it away, she was startled to see an unexpected look in Dexter’s eyes. However, his expression remained largely unchanged, as always, impassive.
Suddenly, Josie felt somewhat uneasy. The calm she had maintained in the past few days seemed to have somewhat dissipated.
“I ran into Moses at the station. Her reason was revealed in a single sentence.
Meanwhile, Dexter scrutinized her. She was somewhat frail, slender like a blade of grass, but standing there, she exuded a unique resilience and determination. Having experienced the world of pleasure and vice, she had seen it all, yet her mind remained clear and lucid.
Indeed, she was his cherished one.
No matter how her appearance changed, her temperament never did. Every time he saw her, Dexter would regret not recognizing her sooner.
Realizing his mistake belatedly, he propped himself up, somewhat resembling a big boy who had done something wrong. “Have you eaten? I didn’t intentionally have Moses follow you. I was just worried that you might get into trouble if targeted by Mr. Harrison, so I…”
In the end, he found himself at a loss for words and decided to drop the subject. “Have you encountered any trouble?”
Josie heard her own sigh in her heart.
She could never harden her heart against him.
“No, Moses did a great job resolving the trouble for me.” Josie stepped forward, noticing a large box in front of him. “What are you looking for?”
