Yan thought for a while and took off her apron before walking out of the kitchen. “I’ll go with you. I’m worried that it’s not safe outside.”
Han Muzi glanced at the time and said, “It’s still early, so it’d probably be safe. And the supermarket is right downstairs. You can wait for me here.”
Yan thought for a while and replied, “Come back soon, alright?”
“Okay.”
After Han Muzi went out, only Yan was left in the house. The surroundings suddenly became much quieter. She glanced at the curtains that were blown by the wind and suddenly shuddered. I should have gone with Muzi; it feels terrifying to be alone in this house.
Han Muzi took the elevator and went directly out of her neighborhood to the supermarket. When she passed the entrance, there was still no one allowed to approach the crime scene that was being blocked off during the day. Remembering that someone had died there this morning, Han Muzi felt scared, so her pace quickened.
After arriving at the supermarket, she first bought the salt that Yan requested, and then she went to get some daily necessities before going straight to the checkout as she wanted to go home quickly. However, though there were only a few people when she arrived, there was a long line at the checkout when she wanted to leave.
Han Muzi looked down at her watch and realized that it was already peak hour. Left with no other choice, Han Muzi could only line up with everyone else. When she came out of the supermarket after paying, it was already completely dark outside.
Han Muzi held on to her groceries tightly and quickened her pace.
As it had gotten dark, when she arrived at the entrance of her neighborhood, she saw a small light at the place where the suicide had happened from a distance. It looked quite sinister and terrifying. No matter how courageous a person was, they would still have goosebumps when faced with such things—let alone Han Muzi.
When she passed by the crime scene, Han Muzi’s pace unconsciously accelerated. She was only relieved after walking far away from the scene. When she wanted to look back at the spot, she suddenly saw a shadow behind her.
Han Muzi’s breath suddenly paused, and her face turned pale at that moment as she stopped her urge to turn around.
She took a deep breath and slowed down. As she had not reached the dark alley yet, she took out her phone and quickly dialed Yan’s phone number.
Seeing that the dark alley was right ahead but Yan didn’t answer her call, Han Muzi was beyond anxious. After she hung up the call, she subconsciously dialed another number that she had always remembered.
One second… Two seconds… Three seconds… Suddenly, something rang from behind her, and at the same time, the number that she dialed was also connected. The moment she heard the call being connected, Han Muzi immediately said ‘help me’ without a second thought.
With the faint light, she saw the shadow behind her leaping toward herself. Just when she was about to scream and run away from fright, her mouth was covered by that person, and then she was dragged into the dark surroundings next to her.
“Mmph!” Han Muzi’s eyes widened. When she felt that her hands and feet were being overpowered, she was so scared that her heart almost jumped out of her throat. She struggled hard and even opened her mouth to bite the hand of the perpetrator.
“Argh!” When that person was bitten by her, he groaned in pain, but he did not take back his hand. Instead, he said in a low voice, “It’s me!” His deep and dull voice added a mysterious flavor to the darkness. Meanwhile, he also sounded a little annoyed because he was bitten.
Han Muzi paused. She recognized this familiar voice. The next second, tears welled up in her eyes and almost rolled down her cheeks. However, she hurriedly held the urge back, and she felt grateful that they were in a dark corner. That way, the other person couldn’t see how she looked.
In the dark…
Han Muzi was holding the phone in her hand, and the screen displayed Ye Moxuan’s name.
Ye Moxuan held her with one hand and held his phone to his ear in front of her with the other hand. His low voice ebbed into her heart like the sound of a cello. As if he did this intentionally, he spoke into the phone.
The low male voice sounded clear from Han Muzi’s phone and overlapped with his voice in reality. “Looking for me? I’m right in front of you now.”
Han Muzi bit her lower lip. But in the next second, she was so angry that she threw her phone at Ye Moxuan.
Ye Moxuan held her hand and chuckled in a low voice. “If your phone is broken, how can you call me next time, eh?”
After hearing this, Han Muzi became even more furious. She couldn’t believe that he still had the mood to tease her.
She pulled her hand back hard and glared at him. Although she knew that he couldn’t see her in the dark, she still wanted to express her emotions.
She had thought she was being followed by someone else. Because of what happened in the past two days, her emotional defense was very low. She had panicked when she discovered that someone was following her just now. Otherwise, she would not have subconsciously called Ye Moxuan when she was flustered just now.
That was fine, but he just had to see her like this too. Suddenly, panic, anger, sadness, and shame all surged up within her.
“Are you nuts? What are you doing behind me? Don’t you know that you can scare another person to death? You b*stard, are you crazy? You must be crazy!” Toward the end, Han Muzi was so angry that she directly raised her hand to hit Ye Moxuan on the chest.
However, Ye Moxuan merely stood there like a statue and let her fists fall on his chest without saying a word. All while Han Muzi cursed and sobbed.
Seeing Han Muzi like this, Ye Moxuan felt very upset, as if his heart had been punctured. He took all her beatings, but after listening to her sobs, he couldn’t help but reach out and hold her hands.
Han Muzi raised her head in shock. Under the faint moonlight, Ye Moxuan saw the tears in her eyes. There was a stabbing pain in his heart, and Ye Moxuan forcefully pulled her into his arms.
Just like this, she was pulled into his warm embrace without any warning. When Han Muzi reacted, Ye Moxuan’s hand had already wrapped around her waist. His warmth was like sunlight in the dark.
At that moment, she was really frightened. She bit her lower lip as tears gradually flowed out of her eyes. She couldn’t help it anymore.
“I’m sorry.” The vibrations of Ye Moxuan’s hoarse voice entered her ears and felt like it touched her heart through her body. “I will protect you,” he whispered.
Han Muzi didn’t answer him because she had already burst into tears. However, Ye Moxuan continued to speak, “I didn’t know… that the first person you’d think of when you’re panicking is me.”
His words made Han Muzi recover to her senses. She realized that she might have accidentally exposed something in front of him. Thereupon, her expression changed and she reached out to push Ye Moxuan away.
However, he pressed the back of her head to him. “Don’t move.”
“Let me go—mmph.”
Her mouth was covered, and Ye Moxuan lowered his voice. “Someone is coming.”
